It’s so hard!
Come on. You can do this. Not much further now.
I’m dying. I must have been going for 10 minutes now!
Not quite there yet. Just keep putting one foot in front of the other…
I can’t do this.
Yes you can.
I’m going to give up!
No! Don’t give up. You know if you do, it’s all over.
I. Can’t. Keep. Going.
Yes you can. Almost there.
That, ladies and gentlemen, is the sound of the inside of my head – while running.
Don’t go there alone!
It’s not a great place to be. Particularly towards the end of a longish (for me anyway) stint. The internal noise can get somewhat overwhelming.
But if there’s one thing I have learned from running, it’s this:
I absolutely cannot. Will not. Ever, give up. Because the moment I do – it’s all over.
If I give up on a run, I just know that will be it for me. I probably wouldn’t ever pick up my running shoes again. The only thing that keeps me going is the knowledge that each day I’m getting better.
Each day, I’m getting stronger.
Each day I’m getting faster.
Each day I’m able to hold out a little bit longer.
So I keep at it. And in my darkest moments, I remind myself that to give in would be death to my running habit. And the idea of giving in… Of failing so completely – spurs me forward. It gives me just the little bit more energy and motivation to keep going. If only for a little while longer.
We all have our dark moments, right? Probably you have them on occasion when you’re trying to build your business. Times when it all just seems too hard.
Times when nothing seems to work.
Times when the money doesn’t seem to stretch far enough.
Times when nobody else understands.
Those are the times when you have to remind yourself why you’re doing what you’re doing. And what the consequences of failure are. They’re the times when you have to spur yourself forward with a powerful why.
Most days – those things will be enough.
But maybe one day, they won’t be. And you’ll give up.
Probably on that day, you’ll wallow in self pity for a while. You’ll beat yourself up some. Because you failed. Because you weren’t strong enough. You weren’t fast enough. Because you weren’t able to hold out long enough.
And it will all be true. But there’s always tomorrow.
I love ya – Tomorrow!
Tomorrow, I’ll pick up my running shoes and try again. And I will be stronger. I will be faster. I will be fitter. And the next time I try I’ll make it. Because I’ll have learned the lessons of my previous failures.
And so it is with you. When you fail – you pick yourself up again. You learn the lessons of the past, and you change and tweak your business where you need to.
And you try again. And again. And again if necessary.
Until that day when you succeed.
