Blue Sky Thinking

If you’ve come from any kind of a corporate background you may have heard the term “blue sky thinking” at some point during your career. Maybe you once heard a consultant say she wants people to think out of the box – unconstrained by current realities, as though anything were possible.

Open mindedness is the generally accepted definition for Blue Sky Thinking. I have a slightly different definition though.

I love to travel, and one of the best moments for me in my travel experiences is when I fly, and the plane reaches that point during ascent where it emerges from any ambient cloud cover. That’s the moment when I realise once again that, no matter what things look like from the ground – above the clouds, there’s always clear blue sky. And even though I can’t necessarily see it (particularly if it’s a night flight!) – the sun is always shining.

That, for me, is what Blue Sky Thinking is all about.

Parting the clouds of day to day life

We all have good and bad days, right? I know that for me, on the good days – my thinking is clearer. More positive. Less of a struggle. For the most part, being able to think clearly and in some kind of focused manner about what I’m trying to do, where I’m headed, how I’m going to get there – is a function of how many clouds are getting in the way.

The kind of clouds I’m talking about here are basically obstructive thoughts. If I’m spending all my time thinking about a challenging relationship for example. Or some financial problems. Or some other issues that keep playing around and around in my head. Those things are going to make thinking clearly difficult for me.

We even have a phrase for when that happens. We talk about having “clouded judgement.”

If we want to think clearly we need to find a way of doing it from above the cloud cover.

Seeing clearly

If we can get above the clouds of our obstructive thoughts then we’ll find that without the cloudiness, without the mist and any other atmospheric elements impeding our vision, it’s much easier to see clearly.

It’s a beautiful and refreshing thing. If you’ve ever flown, you’ll probably remember the first time you emerged from those clouds – right?

If you haven’t, I can only recommend you do so at some point. It’s a powerful experience. And that’s exactly the same as what you’ll find if you’re able to rise above the cloudiness of obstructive thoughts into a place of clarity.

Seeing further ahead

When you do so you’ll also find that you’re able to see much further ahead than you’d normally be able. If you go high enough, you can even see the curvature of the earth.

You’d never see that from the ground. Unless maybe you were on the ground of the moon or something. But even that is the same thing as what I’m talking about.

The moon has no atmosphere. It’s the atmosphere, the clouds, the prevailing [psychological] weather conditions that prevent us from seeing clearly and with perspective.

Remembering that the sun is always shining

And sometimes those prevailing conditions make us forget that somewhere, the sun is shining. Be it immediately above the clouds in our own sky, or in some other geography. The sun is there. And it is shining. Radiating light and warmth.

Here in the UK when it’s winter time, it can be difficult to remember sometimes that the sun is shining. But we all know that come the spring, the sun will become more of a feature of our lives again. So we live in hope for that day.

If we didn’t have that hope, it’d feel a bit like the gloom and the darkness were going to last forever. And that would suck, quite frankly. Having a sense of hope, something to look forward to is important.

Obviously rising above the cloud-cover in a plane is one thing. Rising above the clouds of day to day life into a place of clarity and perspective can be quite another.

But it’s crucially important to you and your business that you are able to do that. After all, if you can’t think clearly, and see beyond the immediate challenges of your business and life circumstances to where you actually want to be – 6 months, a year, 5 years down the line…

Well, how do you think that’s going to work out for you?

We can help you to get clear. We can help you rise above and gain some perspective on your challenges in both business and life.

We can help you gain the perspective you need to see far ahead, and to devise and implement a plan for getting to the place you see in your minds eye.
